Tree Workshops

Peterborough Green Up is hosting tree workshops at Ecology Park this summer. Although the workshops are part of their Urban Forest program, some of the workshops may be of interest to rural landowners as well. The workshops are free of charge, but donations are appreciated. Forest Ecology Workshop
May 10, 2008, 7:30am-12:30pm

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day on May 10th with the Caring for the Moraine Project. Activities kick off with Ken Towle leading an early morning bird walk on ‘Medd’s Mountain’ starting at 7:30 a.m. The formal workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes presentations on forest ecology and ecological woodlot management, followed by a guided forest ecology hike. Forest Gene Conservation Association AGM
June 17th & 18th, 2008

The FGCA's 14th annual general meeting is scheduled to take place Tuesday and Wednesday June 17 & 18th at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville, eastern Ontario (south of Ottawa). The meeting will include a speaker series, an FGCA business meeting and a field tour. More details will be posted soon.


Urban Forestry Speaker Series:

Peterborough Green Up, with support from the LWCC and other sponsors, is hosting a free speaker series on Urban Forestry. All three evenings will include guest speaker followed by a panel discussion between local experts and the audience.


Wednesday, February 6, 2008:
Paul Gray of the Ministry of Natural Resources will speak about climate change. Sponsored by the LWCC.

Wednesday, March 6, 2008:
Treasured Trees, Growing a Green Heritage Bruce McGauley, R. P. F. City of London. Sponsored by the Kawartha Heritage Conservancy.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008:
Sustaining Our Urban Forest, Starting a Neighbourhood Forest Stewardship Program Dr. Andrew Kenney, University of Toronto. Sponsored by the Peterborough Field Naturalists.

The workshops are free and will take place in the downstairs auditorium at the Peterborough Library from 7-9pm. Representatives from the LWCC will be at each event and would be happy to speak to those interested in learning more about our organisation.


Ontario Woodlot Association AGM:
March 8, 2008

The OWA’s 15th Annual General Meeting and Woodlot Conference in Peterborough. Topics include woodlot tax planning, wetland management, how to manage for a healthy woodlot, species at risk and taking an inventory of your woodlot. Advance registration is required: To take advantage of the “early bird” registration rates ($20.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members) you must register and pay in advance by cheque, Visa or Mastercard prior to February 11, 2008. Lindsay Winter Woodlot Conference:
February 21, 2008, 8:30am-3:30pm

The 2008 Lindsay Winter Woodlot Conference will be held at Moose Lodge in Lindsay from 8:30am until 3:30pm on Thursday, February 21, 2008. Topics being addressed by speakers include climate change, Trees Ontario Foundation, elm recovery, chainsaw safety and maintenance, options for longterm conservation, and Tree Seed Plant (for the agenda click here). The cost of pre-registration to reserve a roast beef dinner is $25. The registration fee at the door without a meal is $15.00.

Trees Ontario Workshops:

Trees Ontario, along with partners, the Ontario Forestry Association (OFA) and local planting agencies will host a series of free workshops focused on incentive programs for planting trees, tree planting techniques and the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) that can reduce your property taxes by up to 75%.

Managing your woodlot for profit:

The Peterborough County Stewardship Council is holding a workshop to help you sustainably manage your woodlot. Topics to be covered include: basic forestry concepts, forest management plans, forest invasive species, harvesting considerations, selling standing timber, wood product marketing, sources of woodlot management assistance, and much more!


The workshop consists of three Wednesday evening sessions at Norwood District High School (7:00 - 9:00pm on November 21st, 28th, and December 5th) and a full day field tour through a local woodlot on December 9th. The cost is $50.00 (includes a comprehensive manual and lunch the day of the field tour), or only $75 for two family members (one manual and two field lunches).

Trenton Woodlot Conference:
November 23, 2007, 8:30am - 3:30pm

The Trenton Woodlot Conference will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 57 Stella Crescent, Trenton on Friday, November 23, 2007 from 8:30am until 3:30pm. Presentation topics include: mid-tolerant hardwood regeneration, trail construction, flying squirrels and forest health, bald eagles, and species at risk. Optional field trips are available to local woodlots.
